The Alves de Sousa family has been making wines in the Douro Valley for 5 Generations. Domingoa lies de Sousa is a visionary who creates unique wines in the exceptional terroir of Santa Marta de Penaguião,. The vineyards are located in small terraced mountain plots at high altitude on the mountains surrounding the winery. The soils are made of schist and granite. Yields are low. Biodiversity is encouraged with hedges planted around parcels and all work is done by hand. 

Alves de Sousa works only with native grapes from the family’s vineyards. In 1999 the Portuguese wine magazine “Revista de Vinhos” awarded him as “Producer of the Year” and they repeated it again again in 2006 – making Domingos Alves de Sousa the first person ever to receive this award twice.

His son Tiago Alves de Sousa knew from very early on that he wanted to be a wine-maker and focused his studies on viticulture and in 2010 he finished his doctorate. Tiago brings a sound technical background, good understanding of nature and an excellent palate to the wine making. He is taking a holistic approach to making wine: It’s all about nature. It’s how the plant is treated, how the grapes are processed, the soil, the wind, the sun – every vineyard in the Douro has it’s own characteristics.

Spontaneous fermentation occurs with native yeasts before the wines are aged in concrete tanks on the lees. Finally, the wines undergo very light filtration before bottling. The wines are an extraordinary example of elegance, balance and finesse.
