about CAYTHORPE FAMILY ESTATE
Caythorpe is nestled in Marlborough’s Wairau Plains, the heart of New Zealand’s Marlborough winegrowing region. Once an ancient riverbed, the free-draining, deep silt loam soils are ideal for viticulture. Paired with plentiful sunshine, cool nights, and low rainfall, it is the perfect location to grow world-class grapes.
Simon Bishell is the fifth generation of his family to manage the vineyard. The winemaking philosophy is based on rigor, the cult of slowness, and continuous improvement. To achieve this, it is crucial to work in accordance with the rhythms of nature. Simon won New Zealand’s Young Viticulturist of the Year Award in 2008.
In this balancing act, winemaker Jeremy McKenzie masters the art of slowness and age-old traditional practices. The wines are vinified in steel vats, oak barrels, and concrete eggs.
